RECENT Conservation Commission HIKES

We conduct hikes around town every now and then. If you haven't been able to join us on these hikes, please come join us for our next hike in Washington or set out on your own.
We have a Trail Map available at the Town Hall that shows the vast trail network in Washington. We are fortunate to have a section of the Monadnock Sunapee Greenway and the Pillsbury State Park trails in our town. Get out and enjoy our trails! If you are on private land, please be respectful and leave the trail and property as you found it.

East Washington was the site of a hike we took last summer. Arin Mills led us on this hike, which had an agricultural and mill site educational focus. Starting at the Mill Pond dam (an old mill site) in East Washington, we walked up Purling Beck Road and entered a trail on the Schwartz's land. We wound our way through the woods to the Eccardt Farm's corn fields and took an ice cream break at the Farm's Store. We headed back around the corn field and up the snowmobile trail to the top of Bear Hill. From there we followed the road back down to the Mill Pond beach. It was a beautiful summer day and we all learned a lot about the history of East Washington.

Our fall hike took place in two local trails. Again we were led by Arin and we first hiked the Camp Morgan Nature trail loop, starting at the Faxon Hill radio tower parking lot. The kids were given a scavenger hunt to do, looking for many natural items in the woods and on the trail. We then crossed the road and headed up the trail to Oak Hill. This property was heavily logged a few years ago and though the trail starts out in a pretty forest, you soon find yourself in a heavily cut-over area. The trail then becomes steep and you will find your way to the summit fairly quickly.

The view from Oak Hill is wide open and gorgeous with a 360 degree view of the fall foliage. This is a great hike for taking in expansive views of Washington and our neighboring towns. You can see the Lempster windmills, Silver Mountain, Bradford, Hillsboro, Mount Monadnock, Stoddard and all the way west to Vermont.
